Glacier Country includes the two world famous towns of Franz Josef Glacier and the Fox Glacier
There are two major towns within Glacier Country, being Franz Josef (Pop 480) and Fox Glacier (Pop 282).
Fox Glacier is located near the world famous Fox Glacier and the most photographed lake in New Zealand - Lake Matheson and its glow worms.
Before Franz Josef and Fox Glacier have a range of activities ranging from the walks on the Fanz Josef or Fox Glacier with a duration of 3 hours, cycling to Lake Matheson (Fox Glacier), scenic helicopter flights of Mt Cook, Fox, Tasman and Franz Josef Glaciers.
Visitors to Franz Josef or Fox Glacier will find a small but comfortable townships with a good selection of accommodation and various restautants to cover all budgets.
Despite being in the wilderness, the both Franz Josef and Fox Glacier townships have all essential services including a good garge, medical and Visitors Centre and Department of Conservation Offices.
